The director of the Tiraspol School of Political Research Anatoli Dirun considers that the struggle in the so-called presidential elections in the Transnistrian region will be between two candidates – the current leader of Transnistria Yevgheny Shevchuk and the head of the Supreme Soviet Vadim Krasnoselski. The opinion was stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe, IPN reports.
A poll carried out last week by the Moscow-based Russian Public Opinion Research Center shows that Vadim Krasnoselski is the favorite of the election race. Over 25% of those polled said they would vote for this to become the head of the Transnistrian administration. Yevgheny Shevchuk is supported by 14% of the respondents. Over 80% of those surveyed would go to vote.
Anatoli Dirun said the election campaign in the region starts officially now, but unofficially it began long ago. In his annual news conference, Yevgheny Shevchuk announced that he will run for a second term in office. Vadim Krasnoselski said he will announce his decision when the election campaign starts officially.
The so-called presidential elections in Transnistria will take place on December 11. Candidates can be fielded from September 12 until November 10. The local election commission announced that two persons have so far informed about their intention to collect signatures for being registered as election runners. These are Irina Vasilachii and Gennady Kuzmichev.
