Two camps could be created in Giurgiulesti and Slobozia Mare villages, which form part of the Moldovan area of the Danube River. Also, eight stops may be set up on the tourist route, shows a feasibility study made by the Association for the Development of Tourism in Moldova. The project comes as a solution for diversifying the accommodation units in the area.
The Association’s head Viorel Miron, in a news conference at IPN, said the feasibility studies for the tourism projects represent a condition imposed by the EU donors for providing non-reimbursable financing. The feasibility study conducted by the Association shows that not very expensive accommodation units are necessary in the area, such as camps with towers, little wooden houses, playgrounds and selling areas. Places can be also set up for mobile houses that are widely used by foreign tourists.
Viorel Miron noted that the setting up of two camps, eight stops and five tourist information centers at the local museums situated on the Giurgiulesti-Cahul road will cost 4.5 million lei. “By this concerted effort, the Association for the Development of Tourism in Moldova and the local public authorities are promoting new tourism projects on the Danube,” he stated.
The feasibility study also revealed that the health spa services should be extended. The local travel agencies report a regular flow of tourists only for Cahul district, where about 8,000 tourists, who go there especially for health spa treatment, are served annually. The interest in the Cahul destination has significantly increased. The revenues from the organized internal tourism to Cahul rise by about 5% a year. A sum of 4,751 lei a stay or 313.34 lei a day (data for 2013) is spent in the Cahul destination within the internal tourism organized through travel agencies. There are five more important health spas in the Moldovan area.
According to the Association for the Development of Tourism, more than 184,000 foreigners annually visit the Moldovan area of the Danube, which includes the districts Cahul, Cantemir and Taraclia and the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, crossing the customs posts there.
