Two policemen from Cahul were fined 20,000 lei and 26,000 lei respectively for asking bribe. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in both of the cases, the police officers were caught red-handed, immediately after receiving the money, IPN reports.
One of the policemen aged 27 was accused of asking for 1,000 lei from a person driving without a license for not holding him accountable. Prosecutors requested the Ministry of the Interior to launch an internal inquiry. As a result, the inspector was fired. Besides being fined 26,000 lei, the officer was banned from holding public posts for a period of three years.
The second policeman, aged 29, asked for 2,000 lei from a driver involved in a traffic accident. The court fined him 20,000 lei and banned him from holding posts in the Ministry of the Interior for a four-year period. He was fined a lower amount because he admitted his guilt and cooperated with the police during the investigation.
The sentences can be appealed to a higher court.
