Twenty-one persons catch hepatitis A in Floresti district

A hotbed of viral hepatitis A was identified in Casunca and Prodanesti villages of Floresti district. During a month, 21 persons, nine of whom children, became infected with this disease, IPN reports.

The first case of viral hepatitis A was recorded at the end of October. The patients received treatment at the Floresti District Hospital. Nine children aged between five and 14 remain hospitalized there.

According to vice director for epidemiological supervision of the National Public Health Center Nicolae Furtuna, the water in wells is the main source of infection. Afterward, the disease is transmitted by dirty hands and infected food. “If the people bought bottled water or boiled the water from wells, the risk of beaming infected would be lower,” Furtuna stated for IPN.

He added that the period is now favorable for the spread of viral hepatitis A.

According to doctors from the district, the state of the children is medium grave and these are out of danger. They will have yet to receive treatment for about a month.

As many as 169 cases of hepatitis A were reported in Moldova in the first ten months of this year.

Hepatitis A is an acute infectious liver disease caused by the hepatic virus A (HAV). Many of the cases have no symptoms or few symptoms, especially among young people.
