TV programs in election campaigns will be interpreted in sign language

As of this year, the broadcasters are obliged to ensure the access of persons with hearing and visual impairments not only to news programs, but also to electoral programs. Such a provision took effect on January 1, but will be applied in the electoral period.

Lilia Gutu, consultant at the Communications and Public Relations Service of the Broadcasting Coordination Council, has told IPN that the programs that must be interpreted in sign language will include electoral debate programs, political talk shows and news bulletins broadcast in prime time, at 5pm and 11pm.

The programs will be rerun in sign language or synchronous subtitling if this was not possible during the live broadcast for particular reasons. The subtitles will be placed at the bottom of the screen and will have a readable size. They will move at an average speed and will match the shown images.

As from September 1, 2017, the broadcasters are obliged to daily air by a news bulletin in sign language or synchronous subtitling in Romanian in prime time for persons with hearing impairments and in audio version for those with visual impairments.
