Tusk confirms EU’s support for Moldovan reforms

The outgoing President of the European Council Donald Tusk has confirmed the European Union’s support for reforms in Moldova. During a meeting in Brussels with visiting Prime Minister Maia Sandu, Donald Tusk congratulated Moldova on managing a peaceful transition to a new government.

The Moldovan Government said in a press release that the meeting aimed to assure the President of the European Council of the current Government’s determination to advance on the Europoean integration path. Maia Sandu also informed Donald Task about the priorities of her cabinet and the commitments to respect the fundamental rights of citizens, and to consolidate democratic principles by firmly fighting corruption, ensuring transparency and establishing a genuinely free market. 

Maia Sandu reiterated the Government’s priority to relaunch the partnership with the EU based on the commitments under the Association Agreement.

According to the press release, Donald Tusk wished Maia Sandu the best of luck in the difficult task of bringing Moldova back on an irreversible track of reform to the benefit of all Moldovans. The official said that there is willingness among both the EU institutions and the member countries to support Moldova in its reform agenda.

Also today, the Moldovan prime minister met in Brussels with European Commission Vice President  Maroš Šefčovič to discuss details of cooperation in the field of energy security, this being a priority of the current Government. One strategic issue discussed was the development of interconnections with the EU, particularly the completion of the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline project.

Maia Sandu is visiting Brussels during July 2-4.
