Tuition at Moldova’s universities raised due to inflation and energy crisis

Tuition fees at the universities of Moldova were increased owing to inflation and the energy crisis. Contacted by IPN for a comment, secretary of the admission commission of the Academy of Economic Studies (ASEM) Sergey Portărescu said the Academy incurs costs that should be covered and these are influenced by inflation.

Tuition at ASEM varies between 8,500 and 9,500 lei for bachelor’s studies and is about 10,000 lei for master’s studies. “We need to pay for public utilities and the lecturers also expect to be paid at least a modest bonus to the salary so that they could also cope. We raised their salaries less than others did,” stated Sergey Portărescu. He noted that the Academy can now accept more than 2,500 students. The number of budget-funded places grew to 470 compared with last year and 12 of these are intended for citizens of other states.

Among the most popular specialties are Business and Management, Finance and Banking, and Applied Informatics. This year, the Academy of Economic Studies implements the dual education model that is applied for the Business and Management, and Applied Informatics programs of study. Those who already filed applications will be able to ask to be transferred to dual education groups in August. “Dual education implies work with state-owned enterprises and organizations. The students study in the buildings of ASEM and at the workplace and can this way learn practical things at organizations and can easier familiarize themselves with the main processes. Respectively, this makes the dual education offer more attractive,” stated Sergey Portărescu.

The tuition fees at the Technical University (UTM) are also higher than last year. Radu Melnic, secretary of the admission commission, said that their institution during a month paid twice more for heat, from 1.6 million lei to 3.5 million lei. The prices of electricity, gas and heat affected the price of the contracts of study, while the reorganization of universities by absorption influenced the educational process. From this year, those who will apply to such faculties as Veterinary Medicine, Horticulture and Agronomy can submit the necessary documents to the admission commission at the UTM’s campuses in Râșcani and in Petricani. The deadline for the submission of papers in the original is August 5 inclusive.

Alexandru Corlăteanu, secretary of the admission commission of “Nicolae Testemiţanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said their university provides such programs as Human Nutrition, Public Mental Health, Clinical Optometry, Physiokinetotherapy and Rehabilitation. Among the most popular specialties are Stomatology, Medicine, and Pharmacy. The admission plan this year includes 450 budget-funded places for bachelor’s studies and integrated studies and 492 places on a contract basis. Last year all the budget-funded places were filled. This year tuition fees remained the same, while for some of the specialties were even decreased.

Viorica Gladchi, secretary of the admission commission of the State University of Moldova (USM), said their tuition fees grew insignificantly, by 500 to 1,000 lei. The Law, Translation (Faculty of Languages) and Economic Sciences remain the most popular specialties. Usually, not all the budget-funded places at such faculties as Chemical Sciences, Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences are filed. USM this year offers about 60 bachelor’s and master’s programs at their 11 faculties.

The Ministry of Education and Research decided that the State University of Moldova will absorb the Public Administration Academy, the State University of Physical Education and Sport and a number of institutes. The Agrarian University will be absorbed by the Technical University. The Academy of Economic Studies will absorb the National Institute of Economic Research.
