Tricolor is celebrated in Moldova today

“Modern history and our accomplishments in culture, science, education and sport, our openness to the world by what we are starts with the tricolor. When we refer to the flag, these are the most evident and accessible things,” President Maia Sandu stated in a ceremony held to celebrate the State Flag Day, IPN reports.

“But its colors first of all remind of the daily life of our people, of the farmers who cultivate the land, of the tradition of shepherding at those people for whom the sky, sun and pulse of freedom is a way of being, a special way of populating the territory and of perceiving the own nature. Our citizens, regardless of their occupation, intellectuals, traders, workers, shepherds, regardless of their language, ethnicity, age and other classifications, can all find a place under the tricolor of the Republic of Moldova,” said President Sandu, noting that the flag always reminds us of our existence.

The official stated that on this day we also commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for the unity and sovereignty of the nation, those who were persecuted because they courageously hoisted the tricolor. “Here, we think about writers, people of culture, scientists, political personalities who in 1989 went out to take part in the Great National Assembly under this flag. The tricolor always reminds of the National Liberation Movement of the Moldovans. It represents homage to our historical past and a message we transmit to the future: we are people of freedom and of democracy who struggled for political and economic sovereignty, for emancipation from any tyranny,” said President Sandu.

Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian noted that the State Flag Day of the Republic of Moldova is a holiday that fills us with pride, love for the homeland, courage and determination. “The flag is a symbol that is identified with the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova that is today the inalienable element of our identity as a nation. Our country, we, the citizens from all the corners of this land, need unity and involvement, regardless of ethnicity and political preferences,” stated Oleg Serebrian.

On the State Flag Day, the state flag was hoisted at the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Home Affairs and at all its local subdivisions. Officers and sub-officers of the institution honored with dignity the country’s symbol, as did the rescuers, firefighters and SMURD employees and the intervention guards dressed in special clothing.

The state flag was also raised at the General Inspectorate of Carabineers. “The state flag of the Republic of Moldova, besides being a symbol of the state, has also a special meaning and role in the daily life of each service member, since taking an oath of allegiance until joining the Armed Forces’ reserves. It is present at all the military ceremonies and is a symbol of the fighting traditions of the nation, a symbol of the sovereignty and independence of the country. Regardless of the place of assignment or mission, the carabineers always bear the colors of our homeland, the Republic of Moldova,” says a message issued by the General Inspectorate of Carabineers.

The State Flag Day was instituted officially on April 27, 1990 by the members of the first Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. On April 23, 2010, the legislative body voted to introduce this holiday. The State Coat of Arms Day is also celebrated on this day.
