Transport minister suggests including road tax in fuel price of fuels
Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Anatol Salaru proposes including the road tax in the price of fuels. At a news conference on February 18, he said that about 130 million lei in road taxes is collected every year. This money is enough to repair only 10-15 km of road, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The people realize the importance of rehabilitating the roads. Many of them are in favor of increasing the road tax,” said Anatol Salaru. “This tax should be included in the price of oil products for a number of reasons. There are persons who use the car only on Christmas and Easter, but have to pay the same tax as those who damage the road by their trucks.”
According to the official, many drivers do not pay this tax because they do not subject their vehicle to overhaul. Others forge the overhaul documents. Anatol Salaru considers the carriers will stand to benefit if the tax is included in the price of fuels as they will be able to pay it throughout the year not on a fixed day as now.
In another development, the minister said that the Carriers Union demands raising the excise duties on oil products in order to augment the road fund. They say the excises on gasoline should be 300 lei a tonne, while on diesel fuel - 350 lei. As a result, the fuel prices may rise by 0.3 lei a liter on average.
A report by the Transport Ministry shows that Moldova’s economy loses 6-7 billion lei a year because of the roads that are in a poor condition.
