Transport Minister named in charge of Cahul-Giurgiulesti rail line project

Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev named Vasile Ursu, Minister of Transport and Road Management, in charge of the Cahul-Giurgiulesti rail line construction project. The prime minister is worried about the slow pace of the construction works and stated that he “will not allow any disruption of the final steps”. Vasile Tarlev requested the Ministry of Finance to allocate the necessary funds for the construction works. The head of Cabinet emphasised the importance of the railroad track for the economic security of the country. In his words, the implementation of the project will create a significant number of jobs and will contribute to the development of the infrastructure in the region. Cahul-Giurgiulesti railroad track is 50 km long and will ensure the interconnection between the railroad and the Giurgiulesti free port. The cost of the project is estimated at 840 million lei. The construction works were initiated in the beginning of May 2007. Ecologists warn that the construction works of the rail line, if executed without a preliminary research on the environmental impact, risk provoking an environmental disaster – statements that have been refuted by the Ministry of Ecology.
