Transparency International: If at least a part of facts denounced by Mocanu are proved to be true, this would mean a deep crisis in Moldova’s judiciary system
Transparency International-Moldova expresses deep concern regarding the facts invoked at the press conference held by former presidential adviser Sergiu Mocanu and a number of business people from Moldova at the Infotag News Agency on August 11, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a press release from the organization.
According to Transparency International-Moldova, if at least a part of the facts denounced at the press conference are proved to be true, this would mean a deep crisis in Moldova’s penal investigation bodies and the judiciary system that can affect the recently established but still fragile balance in the Moldovan political system. Nevertheless, this kind of declaration was only possible thanks to the gradual democratization of the governing system.
The law enforcement institutions of Moldova need to open an investigation on the invoked facts, prove professional attitude in their examination, exclude self-defensive behavior and situations of conflict of interests (this includes the suspension of public servants from their duties during investigations), it is said in the press release.
Transparency International-Moldova calls upon international organizations to support the Government of Moldova in running respective investigations by engaging independent experts from abroad.
Former presidential adviser Sergiu Mocanu stated recently that businessman Vlad Plahotniuc finances the Democratic Party and controls a number of state-run and private institutions, while his men intimidate the ‘inconvenient’ businessmen through administrative resources.
