Transnistrians with dual nationality have same rights and obligations, Transnistria’s minister of justice
The Transnistrian authorities will continue to guarantee the right to dual nationality, in equal conditions. The given subject was discussed at a meeting of the Commission for the Improvement of the Constitution of Transnistria held on July 7. The major task of the Commission is to harmonize the constitution of the unrecognized republic with the constitution of Russia.
For many Transnistrians, the nationality of another state is a necessity, especially for those that want to go abroad, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in Tiraspol reports.
“The persons with dual nationality in Moldova face difficulties. For example, they cannot hold public posts. The amendment to the Transnistrian constitution clearly defines this point and provides equal rights to everyone,” said Serghei Stepanov, the minister of justice of Transnistria.
“The Transnistrian citizens can have dual nationality, but their rights and responsibilities towards their own country remain the same. The person is responsible in front of the law. The men are not exempted from military service,” said Raisa Klyshta, senior inspector at the Population Documentation Division of the Transnistrian home ministry.
Members of the commission stressed that a similar norm is contained in the Russian constitution - article 62.
There are over 90,000 persons with dual nationality in the Transnistrian region at present.
