Transnistrians erect monuments “to soldiers who lost their lives while defending Russian and Transnistrian land”

Th Construction Company in Bender (Tighina) proposed printing an opposite order calendar counting the days until the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War marked on May 9 and the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic marked on September 2, Info-Prim Neo's correspondent in Tiraspol reports. The decision about the number of copies and costs is to be taken at the next meeting of the town administration. Bender administration head Veceslav Kogut said the calendar will remind the people of the events connected with the two anniversaries. The slogan of the two holidays is “We Will Win Together”. Elena Bomeshko, adviser to the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov on culture affairs, said the Transnistrian authorities intend to erect monuments “to the soldiers who lost their lives while defending the Russian and Transnistrian land”. There are over 450 monuments in Moldova's Transnistrian region. Two thirds of them need to be restored. The restoration costs amount to 15 million rubles (23 million lei), Bomeshko said. The breakaway republic of Transnistria is not recognized as an independent entity. Moldova lost control over this territory after the Nistru war of 1992.
