Transnistrian veterans and refugees seek new law on advocacy
A number of public associations of Transnistrian veterans and refugees submitted a petition to the Parliament, the Government, the Supreme Council of Magistrates and the Supreme Court of Justice, asking annulling the changes to the Law on Advocacy, made in 2010, and drafting a new law with the assistance of civil society, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The petition was signed by the Movement of Transnistrian Refugees, the Justice League, Tiras-Tighina and the Law Enforcement Bodies’ Trade Union. According to the NGOs, the amendments made to the Law on Advocacy violate the human rights, especially of those in need.
The law stipulates that the private individuals can be represented in courts only by licentiate lawyers. The Justice League’s chairman Alexandru Banari told a news conference that these changes are aimed at promoting certain interests and at reducing the number of persons who appeal to courts. “The existence of the public associations is meaningless if they cannot defend their members in court,” he stated.
The NGOs said the given amendments are discriminatory because a rich person can afford to pay for the services of a lawyer, while those in need are deprived of the possibility of seeking justice in court. They said that if the authorities do not react to their petition, they will picket the state institutions and will urge the people not to vote for those who infringe their rights.
