Transnistrian talks might become formal in September, Marian Lupu
Moldova's acting president Marian Lupu thinks that the 5+2 meeting which took place in Moscow on Tuesday, June 21, went smoothly, with all the parties involved in consultations displaying political will for the resumption of formal talks, except only for Tiraspol. He believes there is a possibility that in September the Transnistrian settlement talks could obtain a formal status, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We should note that yesterday we witnessed the start of a new stage. I continue to strongly believe that formal negotiations will be resumed. If in a five-plus-two setting there are six participants who wish to resume formal negotiations and there is only one participant who doesn't, the outcome is obvious. And if these six parties consolidate their efforts, then chances are high that in September we could see formal negotiations resume”, Marian Lupu told reporters.
Russian Ambassador to Moldova Valeri Kuzmin suggested to local reporters not to treat Tiraspol's position as sensational news. “Personally I didn't hear anything about the refusal of the Transnistrian side to participate in negotiations. I did hear, though, many inventions that have nothing to do with reality. We have said there is a chance that these consultations could become formal talks. I'd rather avoid to comment on this, because you will amplify everything and will make a scoop out of it and, as a result, things will worsen. There is a rule for the settlement of any type of conflict: to be tolerant, careful, considerate, so as to help parties proceed to talks and reach a positive outcome”, said the ambassador, when asked by reporters to comment on yesterday's consultations in Moscow.
Moldova's Reintegration Bureau issued a press release earlier today saying that the latest round of consultations was suspended because of the inflexible position of the Transnistrian delegation.
