Transnistrian refugees picket Chisinau City Hall

Representatives of the Movement of Transnistrian Refugees Monday gathered in front of the Chisinau City Hall, chanting “We voted for you and you betrayed us!”, “Liars!”. They said the local public authorities violate their rights, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The organization’s head Anatolie Bizgu said the Transnistrian refugees do not agree with the fact that they can become lawful owners of the apartments they received gratis only in 20 years. The people are concerned that in case of death, their children main remain on the street.
Anatolie Bizgu said that about 150 families of refugees received apartments free of charge in three buildings in Chisinau in 2007, but a part of them have not been yet issued with ownership certificates. As they do not have the necessary documents, the refugees are concerned that the authorities will oblige them to buy the apartments or to free them.
“We are used only in election campaigns,” stated Anatolie Bizgu.
Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said the dwellers of the three buildings situated in Ciocana district pay a symbolic rent of 0.2 lei per square meter. Under the financing agreement signed by the Government of Moldova and the Council of Europe Development Bank, the apartments cannot be privatized before the loan is repaid.
“If the persons are refugees from the Transnistrian region and have a home, is it so important if the apartment is privatized or not? Or they want to purchase them and then sell them, as it happened in other cases? They should have common sense,” said the mayor.
The three apartment buildings located on the streets Nicolae Milescu Spataru, Liviu Deleanu and Ginta Latina were constructed with a €4.9 million loan raised by the Government of Moldova from the Council of Europe Development Bank. The loan is repayable in 20 years.
