Transnistrian militia stage overnight patrol with sirens and flashing lights in Corjova
The Transnistrian militia cruised across the village of Corjova with sirens and flashing lights turned on overnight into Sunday, when villagers were expected at the polling station to elect their mayor, Info-Prim Neo learned from Ion Manole, the head of the human rights organization Promo-Lex.
In the morning, militia cars where still in the village in large numbers, it was reported. Ion Manole thinks this is an attempt by the de facto authorities of the Transnistrian region to thwart the participation of the village, which they consider to be Transnistrian territory, in the local elections organized by the Moldovan authorities.
The polling station for Corjova was opened in the neighboring village of Cocieri. “While the access (to Cocieri) hasn't been blocked, the flashing lights and the sirens were a threat not to participate in the vote”, said Ion Manole.
There are over 1,300 eligible voters in Corjova. The mayoralty is contested between Lib-Dem Valeriu Mitsul and Communist Sergiu Oprea.
During round one on June 5, the Transnistrian authorities had blocked the road from Corjova to Cocieri for several hours until peacekeepers intervened.
