Transnistrian ecologists concerned about condition of the Nistru
The cleaning of the bed of the Nistru River is a major task for the Transnistrian ecologists. The local specialists say the state of the barrages and of the bottom of the river is discouraging, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in Tiraspol reports.
Igor Vit, deputy minister of natural resources and ecological control of Transnistria, said that if the situation does not change, the region will soon face ecological problems. According to him, passenger and cargo ships sailed on Moldova’s main water artery during the Soviet period, but today the river can be crossed walking.
The ecologists say that a thick layer of mud and parts of trees formed on the bottom of the river after last year’s floods. Igor Vit said that the constant destruction of the banks is another problem.
The ecologists sound the alarm: the low level of water can cause serious problems. The fish that migrates to lay eggs will be very seriously affected.
According to the Transnistrian Minister of Natural Resources and Ecological Control, two companies – the fluvial ports in Bender and Rybnitsa - are responsible for cleaning the riverbed, but they have not yet carried out this task.
