Transnistrian delegation in JCC asks for more Russian troops in joint contingent of peace-keepers

The Transnistrian delegation asks the Joint Control Commission (JCC) to address the Russian Federation to add more troops to the joint peace-keeping contingent. The theme was again discussed at the JCC's sitting of June 18, Info-Prim Neo reports “Last time the Transnistrian delegation asked for returning to the old formula of the Russian contingent of joint peace-keeping forces in September last year, after Georgia's military aggression against South Ossetia. There came no answer during nine months, what made the Transnistrian delegation submit another request in this respect,” writes the Transnistrian news agency “Olvia-press”. The agency points out that the decision to reduce the Russian contingent and their armament capacities was benevolently made after the Odesa treaty of 1998, through which the Moldovan and Transnistrian structures committed to do the same. The Moldovan side rejected to consider the request. Noticing mentions about South Ossetia, Moldova's representatives stated they were not willing to deal with political issues. On the other hand, the Transnistrian delegation says strengthening the peace-keeping contingent is meant only for boosting the peace-keeping operations. “It's not a political matter. We can't help taking into account the experience of other peace-keeping missions, including the one from South Ossetia, and we cannot ignore the events happening in the world,” said Oleg Belyakov, the head of the Transnistrian delegation in the JCC, quoted by “Olvia-press”.
