German Chancellor Angela Merkel didn’t came to Moldova with a federalization plan and certainly will not impose such a project because the initiative to settle the Transnistrian conflict must come from Moldova, at the negotiation table, where both Moldovan and Transnistrian representatives participate. The statement was made by executive director of the Agency for Foreign Policy (APE) Victor Chirila during a new meeting of the APE’s Press Club, Info-Prim Neo reports. “This was expected only by those who tried to speculate such developments, either because of ill-will, or because they didn’t know how the European Union works and what the EU’s basic principles of foreign policy are. Germany cannot act as the sole voice of the EU. The European Union has 27 voices and its foreign policy is decided by consensus. That’s why Germany couldn’t have come with a federalization project and impose it on us”, stressed the foreign policy expert. Victor Chirila observed that Angela Merkel’s message made it clear that the Transnistrian conflict will be settled only by respecting Moldova’s territorial integrity and by granting a special status to the Transnistrian region. Angela Merkel repeatedly said that the Transnistrian settlement is a long-term step-by-step process, which fits with the current policy of Moldovan authorities. Before Angela Merkel’s visit in Moldova, the press speculated that Angela Merkel came to Chisinau with a federalization plan for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.
