Transnistrian conflict cannot be settled because of corruption, statement

The government, by staging events to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the start of the battle for defending the integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova, is trying to hush up the own ignorance of territorial integrity issues and neglect of the fate of the people living on the left bank of the Nistru River. A statement saying this was signed by the leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) and the Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA) and by the expert in the Transnistrian issue Oazu Nantoi. In a news conference at IPN, these said the fact that the Transnistrian dispute became a common dirty business of those from Chisinau and Tiraspol is even more serious.

“We must say it clearly: the corruption, irresponsibility and incompetence of the Moldovan political class, which is unable and does not want to reach a compromise on the main principles that should form the foundations of the Moldovan state and cannot exercise a common will of resistance to Russian rulers’ attempts to maintain the separatist regime in the Transnistrian region, are the main causes for the non-settlement of the Transnistrian conflict,” said Oazu Nantoi, reading the joint statement.

The signatories said the current government treats with disdain and cynicism the people from the left side of the Nistru and hypocritically pretend to be concerned about the fate and rights of the people of good faith from Transnistria. According to them, the unclear formulations like the “definitely guaranteed special legal status” for the Eastern region of the Republic of Moldova, on which the Russian diplomats insist and which are borrowed by the Moldovan rulers, hide the intention of conserving the authoritarian regime existing in the region and of creating a nonfunctional and “Transnistrized” pseudo-state instead of the Republic of Moldova.

“Today we can say with certitude that during 25 years, the Transnistrian conflict has turned into a source of income for groups of interests from the right and left banks of the Nistru and only the ordinary citizens of the Republic of Moldova from both sides of the river suffer because of this. During all these years, the rule of law principles were and continue to be violated,” said the PAS leader Maia Sandu.

PPPDA chairman Andrei Nastase stated that the participants in the bloody war on the Nistru do not yet have an appropriate status, while the law that regulates particular rights was truncated in time and requires a new approach.

PLDM head Viorel Cibotaru said that owing to the Plahotniuc – Dodon duo that is now ruling, the Transnistrian conflict not only cannot be resolved, but new zones of tensions are even created by agitation among the population.

The signatories consider the government should urgently demand and ensure conditions for the Russian troops to be definitely pulled out from Moldova and should work out and implement justified policies to ensure the social rights of the participants in the battle for restoring the constitutional regime, of the internally displaced people and victims of the separatist aggression against the Republic of Moldova. Another request made to the authorities is to promote the interests of the Moldovans in the process of identifying a solution to the Transnistrian dispute.
