Transnistria residents can confirm their Moldovan citizenship by yearend

The Government decided to extend by another half a year the period of validity of Decision No.959 of 9 September 2005 “Regarding the measures of ensuring the substantiation of the citizenship and documentation of the people living on the left bank of the Nistru (Transnistria)”. In such a way, the decision will be in force by this yearend, a commentary by the Reintegration Ministry says. According to the cited source, the Government made such a decision owing to the fact that the number of people that want to have their documents legalised and citizenship validated is constant. The executive also hopes that by this move the Moldovan authorities “will strengthen the trust and support for the population of the Transnistrian region, which will favour the social-economic reintegration of the Republic of Moldova.” About 70,000 people residing in the Transnistrian region filed applications to the population registration and documentation sections from September 2005, when the respective decision was made, until June 2007. They applied for 94,688 identity acts. Therefore, the number of Moldovan citizens in the Transnistrian region and of the children under age of 16 registered in their documents is about 400,000.
