Transnistria epidemiologists warn of Nistru swimming hazards

Hygiene and epidemiology specialists in Dubasari call on the population to abstain from swimming in the Nistru River, as salmonella, a pathogen bacteria that can cause serious intestinal diseases, has been recently detected in its water. In addition, cholera bacteria has been discovered in half of the samples taken from popular beach sites in the region, Info-Prim Neo's field correspondent reports. Those who will venture, however, to take a swim in Moldova's largest river should be cautious not to swallow water and should shower afterwards. Last summer, after cholera vibrios were found in the Nistru, the Dubasari District Hospital added to the infectious disease section a special ward for cholera patients. According to official statistics, last year the number of intestinal diseases doubled as the Dubasari hospital treated 227 persons, including 151 children, for acute infections. Besides intestinal diseases, epidemiologist Alexandr Peciula warns Dubasari folks of the danger of getting infected with viral meningitis at the place where the town beach used to be.
