The trains owned by the state-run company Moldova’s Railways will be monitored through a GPS system. This is a move made by the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure with the aim of preventing the thefts of diesel fuel, which, according to Transport Minister Anatol Salaru, amount to half a million dollars a month, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Everyone knows that there is corruption at Moldova’s Railways. 30-40% of the diesel fuel bought for US$1,450 a tonne is stolen every month,” the minister said in a news conference on Thursday. “A train reports striking by a cow two times a week so that they needed to stop. While they stay there, the tanks with diesel fuel are taken out and transmitted to somebody there,” said Anatol Salaru. The GPS surveillance system will register all the work parameters of the engine and pass on the information when and where the train stopped and if diesel fuel was taken out of the reservoir to a computer. According to the minister, such a system is used in Ukraine and it proved its efficiency. Anatol Salaru also said that the reformation of Moldova’s Railways is inevitable. A group of experts from Estonia is expected to come to Chisinau to examine the situation. Moldova’s Railways has 40 trains. The installation of the new system will cost about half a million euros. “With the losses incurred now, this money can be recovered in a month,” said Anatol Salaru.
