Traian Basescu visits Romanian Cemetery of Honor

Romania's President Traian Basescu on January 28 visited the Romanian Cemetery of Honor in Tiganca village of Cantemir district. Accompanied by Moldova's Acting President Mihai Ghimpu, Traian Basescu attended a service held by His Holiness Petru and Archimandrite Irineu Dogaru. Afterward, they laid flows to soldiers' graves, Info-Prim Neo reports. This is the first visit paid by Traian Basescu to the Romanian Cemetery of Honor. He was welcomed there by a large group of people who carried placards and chanted “Basescu”. The Romanian Cemetery of Honor was founded on the Iepureni-Tiganca hill on July 1, 2006. There were buried more than 1,000 Romanian soldiers who were killed in battles at the cape bridge in Tiganca in July 1941. According to documents from the Romanian archive, 2,300 Romanian soldiers were killed in the area and buried at that cemetery. On the same day, Traian Basescu and the Romanian delegation will visit the State University “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” in Cahul and the Romanian consulate in the same town, which will be opened in two-three weeks. Afterward, the Romanian officials will leave for Bucharest.
