Traian Basescu thanks Romanians who voted for him, especially those from abroad
Traian Basescu thanked the Romanians who voted in favor of him, especially those who live abroad, as they decided the final result, Info-Prim Neo reports. In Romania, Basescu had by 15,000 votes fewer than Mircea Geoana and the diaspora brought him victory.
“I want to thank especially the Romanian voters from abroad, from Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Moldova of course,” Basescu said. “I thank the Romanians living in the western part of the United States, who mobilized and voted for me after hearing the exit poll results.”
The winner of the presidential elections stressed he knows that the leader of the Social-Democratic MPs Viorel Hrebenciuc influenced the exit polls and “put Mircea Geoana in an awkward situation.”
The president of the PDL Emil Boc said Basescu will be the President of all Romanians and that the party will support his government program. “Now the politicians must show coherence, stability and balance in decision making for Romania's future,” Boc added, saying the PDL will opt for a Right government.
Mircea Geoana refuses to accept the election outcome. The PSD's Executive Committee unanimously decided to challenge the results and will file an application to the Constitutional Court on December 8.
“It is evident that the presidential elections had been rigged, especially in the polling places set up abroad,” Mircea Geoana said. “There had never been such a small difference in the history of the presidential elections. Those representing the PDL used the state institutions and public money to pay electoral bribes. The obligation to respect the wish of the 5 million Romanians made us decide to dispute the election results.
“We will preserve the parliamentary coalition with the PNL and UDMR and exclude any form of cooperation with the PDL,” Geoana said.
According to the spokesman for Romania's Central Election Office, 10 620 116 Romanians or 58.02% of the persons eligible to vote took part in the second round of voting. Traian Basescu won 50.33% of the vote.
