Traian Basescu stands for re-involving Romania in format negotiating Transnistrian conflict
Romanian president Traian Basescu stands for changing the talks format on the Transnistrian issue by re-involving Romania into it. Traian Basescu made the statement on the Romanian public television on Tuesday, September 9, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Categorically the negotiating format should be changed, I think, into one involving Romania, Moldova and Transnistria, Ukraine and the Russian Federation, as Romania's participation would step up finding a solution,” Basescu said. He said that, unless such a variant is not possible, one can imagine a format in which the EU woulds involve more next to Russia. “The EU and Russia are sufficient as arbiters of the situation,” the Romanian president said.
He reiterated the idea, according to which, the present negotiating mechanism has proved not efficient to solve the Transnistrian conflict for the last 16 years, instead it allowed for strengthening the state structures of the self-styled republic. “ Moldova, Transnistria and Russia is the format really functioning now. We cannot agree, because Russia, as a single arbiter, cannot give solutions,” Traian Basescu underlined.
Basescu mentioned that Romania's prudent position as to the Gorgia conflict was reasoned by the present of the tense situation on the Nistru in Romania's immediate vicinity. “Practically, the conditions are ripe in all the 'frozen conflict' areas to happen what happened in Georgia. We have said that since 2005, because state structures formed everywhere, and they practice a weird propaganda antagonizing the minorities with the majorities on the territory of those states,” the Romanian president said.
On the other hand, according to Basescu, there are big chances that, during the French president of the European Council, Moldova's European perspective should be mentioned in an official document of the EU. “We're struggling, we don't know yet, but we hope the chances with the French presidency are bigger. That is, it's an extremely important political decision and the chance to capitalize the advantages of a strong presidency as the French one is, we say, should not be missed,” the official says.
Traian Basescu has added that Romania promotes Moldova in the EU from quite another perspective than Ukraine. “It would be at least unfair to say we're promoting them equally. We promote Moldova and, certainly we want the NATO and EU perspective for Ukraine because of many reasons, but we can put the equality sign. We support Ukraine decently and with all our strength, and we support Moldova the same, but with even more soul,” the Romanian president has said in the telecast.
