The former President of Romania Traian Basescu, who is the president of honor of the National Unity Party (PUN) of the Republic of Moldova, said the withdrawal of his Moldovan nationality by President Igor Dodon does not discourage him and does not make him give up promoting the idea of Moldova’s union with Romania as this is the only chance to ensure the security and prosperity of the Moldovan citizens.

In a news conference at IPN, commenting on the Chisinau Appeals Court’s decision to uphold the judgment of the ordinary court, which held that the President’s decree to withdraw the Moldovan nationality of Traian Basescu is legal, the ex-President said he is dissatisfied and considers he was wronged and will challenge the judgment in the Supreme Court of Justice. “I’m not the man who would give up or would soften his ideas only because President Dodon wants me not to be a citizen of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Traian Basescu.

The information about a criminal case started against him based on a complaint filed by a former Romanian MP served as a reason for Igor Dodon to sign the decree on the withdrawal of nationality. According to Traian Basescu, the presumption of innocence works in Romania and, for the period during which a person is involved in a criminal case whose investigation is not yet over, the law enforcement agencies issue a record of punishment where it is specified that the applicant does not have problems with the legal system.

The ex-Romanian President said the case based on which Igor Dodon requested to withdraw his Moldovan nationality, was later dropped and his guilt wasn’t proven. The absence of Moldovan nationality prevents him only from becoming president of the PUN, which he intends to grow, but will never make him stop supporting this party.
