Romania’s President Traian Basescu said that when his tenure comes to an end, he may apply for Moldovan nationality in respect for the country and to show his love for the Moldovans. He made the statement in a special edition of the program “In Depth” on Pro TV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.

The Romanian head of state said that after three years the citizens of Moldova are more determined than ever to follow the European road. “This encourages me and shows that we are not wrong to support Moldova on the path to European integration,” he stated

Traian Basescu’s tenure expires in a year and a half. The Romanian official made a state visit to Moldova on July 17, at the invitation of President Nicolae Timofti. While in Chisinau, he had a meeting with Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, who urged him to apply for the citizenship of Moldova so as to continue the struggle on the other bank of the Prut River.
