Traian Basescu: Moldova will not become EU member

Former President of Romania Traian Basescu, in a program on the Romanian TV channel Realitatea TV in the evening of April 17, said that Moldova will not become a member of the European Union, noting that this country, in which Romania invested a lot of political effort, can turn into a major failure, Mediafax reports on its website, quoted by IPN.

Asked if Romania lost Moldova, Traian Basescu said that he considers the non-involvement when the Moldovan Government was formed means a lost Moldova. He added that Moldova can turn into a big disappointment. “We invested a lot of political effort in Moldova. The Republic of Moldova will not become an EU member. Following the Ukraine lesson, the enlargement to the east was stopped. The Balkans remained the only area to which the EU can extend,” said the former Romanian head of state, adding that Moldova can no longer enter the EU only by uniting with Romania.

He also said that Russia will allow neither Ukraine nor Moldova to go towards the EU. He expressed his conviction that after Ukraine Brussels understood that the red line was reached and Moscow will not allow crossing it.
