Ex-president of Romania Traian Basescu was elected president of honor of the National Unity Party (PUN), while Constantin Codreanu, a member of Romania’s Parliament, as first deputy chairman of the party. The elections were held within the party’s Extraordinary Congress in Chisinau on June 25. In the congress, the PUN signed a protocol of cooperation with the People’s Movement Party (PMP) of Romania led by Eugen Tomac, IPN reports.
PUN executive chairman Anatol Salaru said that Traian Basescu is among the Romanian politicians who are most dedicated to the problems of the Bessarabian Romanians. At the same time, the launch of the PUN is a necessity dictated by the economic, political and social situation in the Republic of Moldova, not a manifestation of the political vainglory and thirst for power. “The regimes in Moldova during many years did nothing but built what Traian Basescu defined as “wicked system”. The Republic of Moldova is now a failed state dominated by poverty, corruption and, especially, lack of perspectives owing to this “wicked system”. The PUN was born out of the need to offer the voters an alternative. The Union with Bessarabia should be the future Country Project of Romania,” stated Anatol Salaru.
For his part, the elected PUN president of honor Traian Basescu said he is familiar with the law on parties of the Republic of Moldova. The Moldovan citizens are besieged by deceitful pro-Russian propaganda, which prevents them from making mental progress on the path to the values of the EU and Romania, which the Romanians in Moldova share. “I would like things to be clear. I’m a person who until two years ago was in the middle of the decisions taken by the European Union and know their view for the next 20 years. The politicians in Chisinau who say that Moldova would be in the EU lie to you. The enlargement of the European Union and the extension of NATO stopped at the Prut. The EU’s objective for the next 10-15 years is to integrate the Balkan countries. That’s why it should be clear that the union with Romania is the pragmatic solution for the Republic of Moldova,” stated Traian Basescu.
PUN first deputy chairwoman Ana Gutu said no matter how close Moldova aims to come to Romania through the academic community, by staging symposiums and taking part in cultural and scientific mobility programs, the people realize that Moldova’s union with Romania can be ensured by political ways and everyone should plead for this systematically.
The newly elected first deputy chairman of the PUN Constantin Codreanu assured he will continue to struggle for the ideal of the Romanians everywhere - the Union - from this position as well. “Let’s today launch a political movement that will enter the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and will state from the rostrum that we want the only solution that will bring welfare to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Let’s seek the Union,” said Constantin Codreanu.
The National Unity Party was registered with the Ministry of Justice on June 21 this year. The first congress of the party held on June 25 involved 1,200 delegates and invitees from Moldova and Romania. Among the invitees from Romania were senators and members of Romania’s Parliament and of the local public administration.
