The former President of Romania Traian Basescu, who is the president of honor of the National Unity Party of Moldova (PUN), said their candidate Constantin Codreanu is the only one who can beat Socialist Ion Ceban in the mayoral elections in Chisinau. In a news conference at IPN on May 11, Traian Basescu said that if Constantin Codreanu reaches the runoff, he will defeat the candidate of the Party of Socialists.
According to Traian Basescu, Constantin Codreanu is an honest man and this thing is a fundamental characteristic requested by the voters. He is a non-controversial politician and no one can reproach him for something. “He is young, energetic and is an ideal candidate for Chisinau city that has been disoriented for over a year. He is definitely a candidate who can beat Socialist Ceban in the runoffs,” he stated.
Commenting on a poll made public on May 11, Traian Basescu said the inhabitants of Chisinau want an honest mayor and Constantin Codreanu meets this fundamental criterion in public administration. He is a responsible politician who assumed unionism when this wasn’t yet fashionable, but nowadays the current grows more powerful in Moldova and in Chisinau.
Commenting on the electoral score of 8% with which Constantin Codreanu appears in the poll, Traian Basescu said this is a good score as Codreanu was practically unknown when he announced his candidacy. “I’m glad that he outstripped candidates with much greater political traditions in the Republic of Moldova and I’m convinced that he is the only candidate who witnesses upward trends,” stated Traian Basescu.
As to election runners’ accusations that Constantin Codreanu violated the law when he disseminated a photo where he appears alongside the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, Traian Basescu said the meeting took place during a reception given on Europe Day and was a protocol matter.
