Tragedies experienced by National Army
The National Army during the last two years has been marked by a series of tragic cases. Four military men lost their lives in accidents or killed themselves with National Army guns, Info-Prim Neo reports.
In November 2009, soldier Ion Rusnac, of the Cocieri Peacekeeping Battalion, shot himself with a gun. He was rushed to the Chisinau Central Military Clinical Hospital, but could not be saved. The 18-year-old military man left a suicide note on the wall of his military unit. Such cases of suicide had not been witnessed in the National Army until then.
Half a year later, Ion Bursuc, a contract serviceman of the regional division “SUD-EST” in Stefan Voda, was found shot to death from his AK-74 rifle in the morning of May 10, 2010. The Chisinau Military Prosecutor’s Office started legal action over negligent handling of firearms that resulted in the death of the solider.
On March 20, 2011, a National Army soldier serving with the Joint Peacekeeping Forces was accidentally shot dead by a colleague of his. The soldier went on sentry duty and received an AK 74 gun and two shells with thirty 5.45 mm caliber bullets. The soldier was in the guards' smoking room. He coupled the cartridge to the gun without need. Another soldier approached him and put a pen in the barrel of his gun. Forgetting that he coupled the cartridge, the soldier fired the gun and injured fatally his colleague in the head. The victim died on the way to the Central Military Hospital. The soldier who shot got three years.
The last tragic case happened in the evening of September 21, 2011. A soldier was shot by a sentinel. The incident happened on the territory of the Cahul-based motorized infantry brigade “Dacia”. Corporal on guard No. 1 Vadim Harin was injured fatally from a gun by the sentinel of post No. 2. The Cahul Military Prosecutor’s Office started a legal case over negligent handling of firearms, which resulted in the death of a person. The suspect was arrested for 72 hours.
