Traffic cameras brought 3.7 million lei into budget in six months

More than 72,000 contravention proceedings were instituted in the first half of this year based on the materials provided by the automated road traffic surveillance system. Of these, over 18,000 proceedings resulted in the imposition of fines. An amount of 3.7 million lei was collected in fines as a result, which is about 25.7% of the total number of proceedings.

Speeding represented approximately 65% of the recorded offences. Among other frequent offenses was the non-observance of traffic signs and roadway markings.

Director of the Ministry of the Interior’s Information Technology Service Andrian Sova has told IPN that 90-95% of the cameras at the 41 traffic monitoring areas in Chisinau work. Particular faults appear, but these are temporary and the problems are remedied swiftly.

As to the video surveillance systems installed by district councils in cooperation with business entities, Andrian Sova said these stopped work in 2015. Irregularities were identified as a result of inspections and it was ordered to disconnect the traffic cameras from the central monitoring system of the Ministry of the Interior.

He also said that the nationwide surveillance system is planned to be extended with funds of the Ministry of the Interior. Priority will be given to areas with a high incidence of road accidents.

Fines of 41.5 million lei have been paid in Chisinau municipality since the traffic cameras were set up here (2014 -2016).
