Thirty people were killed and more than 800 other were hurt in 675 traffic accidents that occurred in Chisinau from the beginning of the year. While the total number of accidents is slightly down from last year’s similar period, when 734 accidents with 34 fatalities were reported, now accidents involving children increased significantly. The number rose from 55 to 87, with four lives lost compared to one. The statistics were presented at today’s ordinary City Hall meeting.
Chisinau’s deputy police chief Silviu Musuc said the largest number of accidents occurred in Riscani, and most fatal accidents happened in Botanica. Of the total number, 118 accidents were due to speeding; they accounted for 13 people dead and 125 injured. Driving under influence was responsible for 17 accidents, and 67 accidents were due to tailgating or similar distance-related circumstances. In 288 accidents, pedestrians were involved, 15 of whom were killed. 108 accidents occurred at pedestrian crossings, claiming two lives.
In 87 accidents involving minors, four lost their lives and 122 more were injured. One of the four children who died was under three years of age, and two others were just several months old. The fourth fatal accident involved a 16-year-old.
Most accidents occurred on Tuesdays in the time span between 2:00PM and 4:00PM.
During the last ten years, the deadliest seven months’ period was reported in 2009, when 51 people died and 803 were injured.
