The Trade Union Confederation from the R. of Moldova (CSRM) accuses the Confederation of Free Trade Union “Solidaritatea” to have stolen its members, by collusion with public local and central authorities. The chairman of CSRM, Petru Chiriac declared on Friday, May 12, at the extended meeting of their Assembly, that leaders from “Solidaritatea” along with local communist leaders summon meetings in regions, where CSRM’s members are requested to give up on their membership and change it in favor of the others. Mr. Chiriac says that members are threatened with dismissals from their positions and, at the same time, “abusively tempted” with vacations at spa and health resorts. “Such vacations are to be offered on certain regulations basis, and should not be gifted to all new Union members,” Mr. Chiriac added. By means of these actions, Mr. Chiriac stressed, “Solidaritatea” and the ruling party infringes the Law on Syndicate, the Constitution of RM, and the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention, which stipulate the right to freedom of assembly and the right to association in labour union. These actions are labeled by Mr. Chiriac as a political command, destined to continuing disbanding CSRM, which commenced in December 2000, when “Solidaritatea” detached from first one. CSRM addressed to ILO complaints on infringements of labour Union rights. At the same time, the Unionist asserts that CSRM’s attempts to collaborate with “Solidaritatea” for the sake of the syndicalism movement and for increasing the protection level of employees are futile, because Solidaritatea’s only goal is to “swallow” CSRM. On January 1 2006, CSRM comprised 356 thousand members. During the last year, their number reduced by 40 thousand, inclusively because of Solidaritatea’s recruitment actions. In order to avoid confusions related to the similarity of the Unions’ entitlements, CSRM intends to change its name.
