Trade Union Confederation says registration tax infringes on right to join trade unions

Trade unionists oppose the application of the state registration tax for trade union organizations for obtaining the status of legal entity. The National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova said that this creates obstacles to the organizations and encroaches on the employees’ right to join trade unions, IPN reports.

The state registration tax for trade union organizations is 1,149 lei. By imposing this, the work of the trade union is seriously affected as the goal of this, as in the case of other noncommercial organizations, is not commercial or economic, stated participants in a workshop staged by the Confederation.

The previous legislation, which existed before 2018, didn’t envision the introduction of such a tax for trade unions. Moreover, the trade union organization at the moment is the only noncommercial organization that pays the state registration tax of 1,149 lei, the Confederation noted in a press release.

In this connection, the chairman of the National Trade Union Confederation of Moldova Sergiu Sainciuc said the given problem, besides other important subjects from the trade unions’ agenda, will be discussed in a meeting of the Confederation’s leaders with the Director-General of the International Labor Organization Gilbert F. Houngbo, who is expected to pay a working visit to Moldova in February.
