Tourist trolleybus project in Chisinau put on hold

The launching of trolleybus lines connecting several tourist attractions in Chisinau has been stalled. The initiative was announced in May by the National Association for Inbound Tourism (NAIT) and should have been implemented starting July. During weekends and holidays, tourist trolleybuses, manned by on-board guides, were to depart from the Airport and travel on a route rich in architectural monuments and other tourist destinations.

Natalia Țurcanu, the executive director of NAIT, said that the project could not be implemented because the Chisinau City Council did not approve the fare for this service.

"Ticket sales for tourists is not possible at this time. There is the trolleybus travel fee, which is two lei, and there are exempt categories of people. Nothing else is taken into account. Thus, the tours for tourists can neither be free nor paid”, explained Natalia Țurcanu.

The executive director of NAIT says that, following the autumn local elections, NAIT will re-submit the project to the city council.
