The Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims “Memoria” presented an installation that symbolizes the breaking of silence on the use of torture. The installation was placed inside the Zemstvei Museum in Chisinau and can be visited between 2pm and 6pm until December 16, IPN reports.
The tunnel is created from a black material that is narrowing continuously, but there is light emerging at its end. Behind the tunnel there are human figures who symbolize the stories of survivors. This is only a part of the multimedia installation dedicated to the victims of torture. After the visitors go through the improvised tunnel, they reach the area intended for rehabilitation, where they find out confessions of persons who were subjected to torture.
“We want those who experienced torture to learn to seek aid, while society to be open and offer them this support. The goal of this event is to attract attention to two rights: the right not to be tortured and the right to rehabilitation of those who went through this traumatic experience,” said the executive director of the Center “Memoria” Ludmila Popovici. The idea of creating this installation was put forward by two foreign volunteers of “Memoria” Joela Laghi and Margarida Hourmat.
Within the project, there will be staged two workshops. The first will be open to the general public and will center on rehabilitation through arta, while the second will focus on the human rights and will be intended for a group of students from a foreign language school.
The event forms part of the project “Voice of Hope” that is implemented with support from the European Union Delegation to Moldova.
