'Top 10 Betrayals in Romanian History' revealed
Historians in the Republic of Moldova have compelled a list of “Top 10 Betrayals in Romanian History”, to describe the most notorious cases of treason by persons once thought to be loyal, allies, or friends. The list was revealed at a conference themed “Treason in South-East European History”, held Friday in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The list traces cases of {lèse majesté} from the Dacian king Burebista to the middle-age rules Vlad the Impaler, Mihai the Brave, to the XIX revolutionary hero Tudor Vladimirescu, and others.
The conference was organized by the Association of Historians of Moldova (AIRM) in partnership with the National Association of Young Historians of Moldova.
AIRM president Sergiu Musteata says treason in the history of South-eastern Europe remains a topical phenomenon. “History saw a lot aspects (of treason) over the centuries. For this conference we selected two general aspects – how the phenomenon of treason is described in the age of chronicles and how different historical figures behaved in different ages”, said Sergiu Musteata.
To better understand the phenomenon of treason, the historians tried various approaches, from linguistics, to psychology to law.
Igor Sarov, dean of the History Department of the Moldova State University, said treason is a subject of current interest in the West, adding that in the process of Moldova's integration into Europe it is necessary to “adjust the science of history to the values of the European science”.
“Starting from 1992, the subjects of the scientific conferences on history matters have become more varied. Whereas previously the (ethnic) identity issue was on the front burner, which opened a huge gap between the Moldovan historiography and the Western one, in recent years the focus has shifted from the identity issue to treason”, said the dean.
The case studies presented at the conference will be published in specialist periodicals.
