Too many wolves in Moldova's woods, expert says

A threatened species itself, the comparatively too large gray wolf population is becoming a threat to other species inhabiting the rather small Moldovan woods as well as to hunting, according to a Romanian expert. The forestry agency Moldsiva said in a press release that Ovidiu Ionescu, vice dean of the Brasov Transylvania University's Silviculture Department, visited two centers in Moldova for the reproduction of deers and the bison pound at Padurea Domneasca Reserve, and remarked that Moldova has perfect conditions to develop the hunting sector, however much needs to be done about how the hunting spaces are being managed. “The most pressing problem in this regard is the overly big number of wolves for the Moldovan forests. There should be no more than one or two wolves for every 10,000 hectares of wooded area unless we don't want to see damage”, said the expert. According to Moldsilva, over 70 wolves currently inhabit Moldovan woods. The gray wolf is an animal that enjoys protection under the European Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats.
