Tiraspol will orient itself to Russia when Moldovan signs agreement with EU, Shevchuk

The official Chisinau didn’t take into account the interests of those from the left bank of the Nistru River when they negotiated the Association Agreement with the EU. After this agreement is signed, Tiraspol will direct its products to the markets of the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union. The statements were made by the Transnistrian leader Yevgeny Shevchuk during Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rogozin’s visit to Transnistria, IPN reports.

According to “Novostipmr” Agency, Yevgeny Shevchuk is convinced that the signing of the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU will worsen the situation of the Transnistrian companies. “I regret it that our interests are not taken into consideration. Even if we accept the logic of the Moldovan authorities – that it is one state – I do not understand why our interests are not taken into account,” said the Transnistrian leader.

According to him, the economic realities that will appear after the signing of the Association Agreement will be imposed on the Transnistrian companies too, but this is against their interests. A set of documents signed by Tiraspol and Chisinau provide that Tiraspol can independently choose the foreign trade direction. “We will direct our products to the markets of the Customs Union. I think the foundations of the relations between us, the Customs Union and Russia are being laid,” stated Yevgeny Shevchuk.

He considers that the agreements signed by Moldova will not have a positive effect and the Moldovan authorities should take into consideration the interests of the Transnistrians at the next talks.
