Tiraspol suggests main condition for resolving Transnistrian dispute

The ministry of foreign affairs of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian republic put forward the main condition for settling the Transnistrian conflict: respecting the rights and interests of Transnistrians and putting into practice the results of the local referendum of 2006, IPN reports, quoting the local press.

The Transnistrian side said the format of a final political solution between Transnistria and the Republic of Moldova cannot be determined by third parties and the parameters should be approved by agreements within a direct dialogue between the sides, in the presence of relevant factors and a sustainable consensus.

The Transnistrian authorities insist that the respect for the inalienable rights and interests of the citizens of the Transnistrian region, which derive from the practical implementation of the results of the national referendum of 2006 (unrecognized by Chisinau, e.n.), is a fundamental condition for developing an efficient model of settling the conflict. The Transnistrian side underlines again its position that the sovereignty and independence of the region should be recognized internationally.

In a referendum in 2006, 98% of the inhabitants of Transnistria voted for the region’s independence and for a possible union with Russia, but Moscow hasn’t modified its official position as a result of the plebiscite, pleading for continuing the talks in the 5+2 format.
