Tiraspol says it is ready to restore freight train routes, but Chisinau does not want to

The leader of the breakaway republic of Transnistria Igor Smirnov, in a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Moldova Dirk Schuebel, said that Tiraspol is ready to restore the freight train routes through the region, but Chisinau does not want to, the Transnistrian official agency Olivia-press reported, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “There were signed all the agreements. Only a political decision is needed and the problem will be solved. But the trains do not run yet. This means that Moldova has not yet taken this decision. We dealt with all the aspects and everything is in order on our side. This year, we have increased the capacity of the railways by 30% because the economy has grown and we must work,” said Igor Smirnov. Speaking about the Transnistrian conflict, Dirk Schuebel said the EU is interested in the swift resumption of the official talks in the 5 +2 format. “This problem is very important for us. We hope that the formal talks will be resumed at the next meeting set to take place in Moscow in September,” said Dirk Schuebel. In this connection, Igor Smirnov said that Chisinau has not yet created the conditions needed for resuming the talks in the 5 +2 format. “We must work together. There must be continuity in all the cases, including in the negotiation process, based on the principle of equality. The Moldovan side does not like it. I also do not like working with them, but we must. We must lay down some rules and then we’ll see,” said Igor Smirnov. The meeting that took place on July 19 also focused on the provision of assistance in such areas as public transport and medical services.
