Tiraspol proposes new version of foreign policy concept

The Transnistrian administration has proposed for public debates a new version of the region's foreign policy concept. Oazu Nantoi, expert in the Transnistrian conflict, told Info-Prim Neo that the concept was developed according to isntructions received from Moscow. “We the citizens of Moldova are silently watching as the country’s territory is annexed by the Russian Federation and we call the Moldovan-Russian conflict the Transnistrian conflict”, said Oazu Nantoi. The concept published for debates stipulates the “independence of Transnistria and the maintenance of neighborhood relations with the Republic of Moldova”. The priorities are “the protection of independence and sovereignty through the diplomatic means of the Moldovan Republic on the Nistru; the protection of the citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms and the development of equal and mutually advantageous relations with other countries”. The draft document says that Transnistria gas developed a strategic course for full integration into the Russia-centered Eurasian Union. “Intensifying efforts in this direction will help strengthening the sovereignty and independence of the republic, will guarantee the Transnistrian model of multicultural and multi-linguistic identity and will ensure strong and dynamic economic development”, reads the concept. The only mention about Moldova is that neighborly relations must be maintained, which is necessary element for security, peace, reciprocal trust and cooperation “between the two states”. Expert in the Transnistrian issue Oazu Nantoi thinks that 5+2 negotiations won’t bring any miracles. In his opinion, the format was designed as a trap for Moldova in order to maintain Russia’s control over the situation so as not to allow the settlement of the conflict. The analyst says that if the concept is voted, the reaction of the authorities in Chisinau will be humble and unassertive. “The authorities here are busy with mutual settling of scores and swaggering”, added the expert. Transnistria or the so-called Moldovan Republic on the Nistru is a separatist region that is de jure a part of Moldova. The self-proclaimed Tiraspol regime controls the Moldovan territory on the eastern side of the Nistru River and several villages and the town of Tighina/Bender on the western side.
