Tiras-Tighina: Ukraine war could reach Prut River

Members of the 1992 Tiras-Tighina Veterans Association believe that the war in Ukraine could extend to Moldova, as far as to the Prut River. The concern comes after the spokesman of the Ukrainian army conveyed “information that is very dangerous for the Republic of Moldova”, said Anatolie Caraman, the president of the association, during a press conference. Caraman referred to the information that Russian forces would aim to create a land corridor on the south coast between the annexed peninsula of Crimea and the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova.

In early February, Tiras-Tighina made an analysis of what is happening around Ukraine and warned the Moldovan authorities that there will be a war. The main targets now are Kiev, Mariupol and Odessa, said Anatolie Caraman.

Alexandru Banari, the association’s lawyer, said it was unfortunate that a "”fratricidal war” was taking place in Ukraine. Russians and Ukrainians are of Slavic origin and have the same faith. Bloodshed has been allowed because “a dictator is at the helm of Russia”. “I believe that history will soon judge the bloodshed that is taking place in Ukraine”, said Alexandru Banari said. The lawyer urged all non-governmental organizations in Moldova to appeal to the leadership of the Russian Federation to stop the war in Ukraine.

Sergiu Tataru, vice president of Tiras-Tighina, said that Russian civilians had nothing in common with the bloodshed in the neighboring state, they did not want war and were suffering “because of a politician who does not realize what he is doing”.

The veterans say they are ready to defend the country if need be.
