Three-year-old poisons himself with grandmother’s medicines
A three-year-old boy from Heciul Vechi, Sangerei, was rushed to the Balti Municipal Hospital in a serious condition after he swallowed several aspirins and analgesic drugs.
Ala Condrea, head of the Hospital’s Emergency Admission Section, has told Info-Prim Neo that the aspirin is dangerous for children under 12 as it can develop the Reye syndrome that affects the liver and can have serious effects on the central nervous system. The analgesic drugs taken by children can cause a serious gastric infection. When taken together, these drugs can cause ulcer.
The child was left in his grandmother’s care. When the woman went away for a moment, the boy took six pills from the table where the woman kept the medicines and swallowed them.
Ala Condrea recommends the parents to immediately call an ambulance in such cases and to try to make the child to vomit. “The small children must be permanently kept under supervision. They should not be left in the care of other persons, especially elder children or elderly persons. The parents should keep the medicines far from the children’s reach,” said the doctor.
According to the Ministry of Health, more than 2,000 children younger than 5 needed medical assistance as a result of poisonings and injuries in 2011. At least six children become victims of accidents every day.
