If snap parliamentary elections were held, three political parties would enter the legislative body – the same three parties that are now represented in Parliament. The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) would gain 31.1% of the vote, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) – 27.8%, while the Shor Party - 9.2%, shows the survey “Sociopolitical Barometer May 2023” that was presented by the sociological research company IMAS. The poll revealed that 6.5% of those questioned would not vote, while 13.7% don’t know or didn’t answer.
According to the survey, 39% of the respondents with voting options who would vote for the PAS, 34.5% for the BCS, while 11.6% for the Shor Party.
“Correlate the growth of almost 7% for PAS with the evolution of the rating of Missis President and surely with the period of this visibility campaign, pro-European campaign that produces particular results in terms of the mobilization and reanimation of a part of the disappointed PAS voters. I would make one more mention here. We have the smallest number of undecided persons – about 20% - among the polls conducted these years. So, it is an exercise showing that the PAS is capable of mobilizing even for a period. We will see how long these PR and visibility effects last and when the citizens return to the internal problems,” IMAS director general Doru Petrutsi stated in a news conference hosted by IPN.
Those surveyed were asked who they would vote for if snap presidential elections were held next Sunday. This way, 28.5% of those surveyed said they would vote for incumbent President Maia Sandu, while 23.9% - for ex-President Igor Dodon. If the two competed in runoffs, Igor Dodon would gain 45% of the poll, while Maia Sandu - 38%.
“I want to specify here as I always saw debates related to the previous elections and to this question. Our surveys and the surveys of all the other companies are conducted on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. As it is known, a rather large number of citizens from the diaspora voted in the last elections and influenced particular results, depending on how they voted and in what number. So, these results apply to the territory of the Republic of Moldova. They do not contain the electoral options of those from the diaspora,” noted Doru Petrutsi.
The interviewed persons were asked to state their opinion about the pro-European rally announced by President Maia Sandu for May 21. 33% of the respondents said that such an initiative is necessary as the Moldovans should show to the whole world that they want a future in the European Union. 31% of those questioned said that this is a political PR action for PAS/Maia Sandu for distracting the people’s attention from the absence of results at internal level, while 30% said the initiative is useful. 6% don’t know or didn’t answer.
As to the European Political Community Summit that Moldova will host on June 1, 38% of the respondents said that this is a useful event that will not yet have benefits for the citizens or the country. 28% consider the Summit will be beneficial to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, while 26% think it is a historic moment for the country. 8% don’t know or didn’t answer.
The sociological survey was commissioned by Public Media and was carried out during May 2-19, 2023. It covered a sample of 1,112 respondents. The margin of sampling error is ±3%.
