Three policemen involved in criminal scheme sent to prison

Three operative police officers of the Balti Police Commissariat got jail terms for artificially creating evidence against individuals. They placed narcotics at different persons and then extorted money from them so as not to start legal cases against them, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communiqué from the Prosecutor General’s Office, the three policemen constrained persons with a criminal record, among whom a minor, to put drugs to the victims. If they refused, they were threatened with criminal cases. When the narcotics were placed, police officers carried out unauthorized searches, discovered marijuana and asked for money. The three had used the criminal scheme in March – June 2010. In the period, they extorted about 35,000 lei from ten persons. One of the victims had to sell his car in order not to be investigated. The police officers were found guilty on six counts: abuse of power, passive corruption, violation of domicile, constraining of a juvenile to make erroneous statements, keeping of narcotics, and involvement of the juvenile in criminal activities. Two of the offenders were sentenced to seven years in jail each, while the third got two years and six months. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
