Three persons convicted of trafficking for forced labor

A man and his wife from Calarasi district, together with an accomplice, were sentenced to jail for trafficking persons for forced labor, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in 2003 the three recruited a man and a woman to work in agriculture in Russia, promising them high salaries. When they arrived in a village in Voronej region, they deprived the victims of identification papers and forced them to perform agricultural works during four months.

In 2003, the Cahul Court order closing the case, but the prosecutors challenged the decision. Recently, the Cahul Appeals Court sentenced the three culprits, who are aged between 47 and 50, to jail terms of seven to eight years. The decision is not yet final.
